After we gave our statements to Shortle, Matt and I drove to our usual beachside cafe for brunch. I hoped it would lighten our moods. It didn’t. I don’t know about you, but finding dead bodies isn’t great for my appetite.

We picked at our food silently, staring across the street at the beach, until Matt perked up.

“We should speak to Brad’s wife,” he said with conviction.

“Why? That would be so awkward.”

“Our theory that Brad was the murderer has been compromised.”

“Not if you buy my theory, that Brad killed Mr. Bokor, and Trevor killed Brad, either for revenge or because he’d been seen.”

“We have too many theories and not enough facts. New information might point us in another direction.”

“I’m sure Shortle already spoke with Brad’s wife.”

“Yeah, and Shortle isn’t sharing any information with us. We’re on our own.”

“Are we competing with her to see who can solve the murders?”

“Yes,” Matt said, spearing a piece of melon. “We’re too far into this case now to give up and hope the bumbling Jellyfish Beach Police Department will prevail.”

“Wouldn’t Brad’s widow prefer to be left alone?”

“Of course. But her husband died a violent death. I’ve had to interview the families of murder victims before. It’s not fun for them or for me, but it’s necessary.”

“Then,” I said, “I’ll let you set up an appointment and ask the questions.”

“There will be no appointment. She would just refuse to meet us. We’re going to show up at their home.”

I simply didn’t have the thick skin required of a journalist. But dealing regularly with vampires, werewolves, and other monsters proved I was not a pansy. Right?
